Specialised Tube Inspection Services
Industrial heat exchangers are vital to the economic operation
of many processes in the oil, gas and power generation industries.
Very often the heat exchanger tubes have lower reliability than
associated equipment. They pose a unique inspection problem which
has been addressed by Torch Integrated Inspection Services who have
developed a comprehensive service offering the latest testing technology
for the examination of both ferrous and non-ferrous tubes. The inspection
methods employed are both well established and commercially acceptable
to industry within the UK and Internationally and include:
- Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) 3000 / 9000 the latest
in microprocessor based equipment for the ultrasonic inspection
of tubing.
- Magnetically biased electromagnetic equipment such as Dinsearch
100 or Centest 91 for the rapid inspection of ferromagnetic tubing.
- Multi frequency Phase Analysis Eddy Current Systems for the
rapid inspection of non-ferromagnetic tubing.
- Computerised Analysis Storage and Reporting Systems. Torch Integrated
Inspection Services operates the Automated Tube Inspection System
(ATIS) for the computerised analysis and storage of inspection
data from the above electromagnetic techniques. This includes
an integral package with colour coded tube sheet drawing and statistical
facilities.
By combining these systems the inspection package can be customised
to suit each client’s requirements. For example the IRIS is a highly
accurate but relatively slow system, while Dinsearch, Centest and
Eddy Current testing are much more rapid but less accurate. When
a rapid inspection giving a general indication of tube condition
is required then either Dinsearch or Eddy Current would be used,
depending on the tube material. When highly accurate results are
required and time is less of a factor IRIS would be applied. When
both high productivity and reasonable accuracy are essential then
the systems are combined, with IRIS being used to cross-check a
percentage of the tubes inspected by rapid systems. This approach
ensures that the clients get the most cost effective inspection
to meet their requirements. Our technicians are highly trained and
certified under the PCN or ASNT schemes for ultrasonics, surface
inspection, eddy current testing and visual examination.
In addition, specialised tube inspection training has been undertaken
by highly experienced technical personnel. This has included both
classroom and directly supervised “in-field” training. In addition
to specialised tube inspection the service can include design advice,
fabrication and/or repair facilities, heat treatment, welding and
metallurgical consultancy and additional NDT services. These facilities
are all available within the Motherwell Bridge Group and can be
activated on a single source basis thus giving savings on both time
and financial aspects.
