The fifth wheel is the plate which takes the weight of the trailer at the fulcrum point between the Traction vehicle and the Trailer. The fifth wheel is typically made from a quality steel approx. 12mm thick plate and is formed in two operations. The profile of the plate is formed through a blanking operation in the right hand die, the profile is then converted to its drawn form in the left hand die which incorporates a die cushion. Both operations are performed simultaneously.
