Motherwell Bridge Ltd, the Lanarkshire-based engineering contractor, has announced details of two new contracts totalling £7 million and has also confirmed that it is to launch a new division.
MB Engineering Services will construct and install five large-scale storage tanks for Alstom Power Ltd, one at Isle of Grain Power Station and four at Staythorpe Power Station. The tanks range in size from 21 to 36 metres in diameter, with the largest being used to store up to 20 million litres of oil and water. Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally conscious technologies.
Due to the scale of the tanks, MB Engineering Services will use a tank jacking system and will construct them on-site at Alstom’s respective facilities. MB Engineering Services will prefabricate and weld the tanks’ coned roofs at ground level before slowly jacking up the structures and welding the tanks’ side panels.
Russell Ward, managing director of MB Engineering Services, said: “These are two very substantial and technically challenging contracts which have helped to bolster our already strong order book. We have continued to secure work, despite the current economic climate, and are in a very healthy position. Our storage tank division has over 70 years experience and this is a major factor in our success, as companies tend to appoint contractors with a proven track record.”
Mr Ward also confirmed that the group has launched a new Materials Handling & Process Engineering division, which is headed by divisional manager Martin Wylie who joins from process engineering company ISF Group Ltd.
Mr Ward said: “Motherwell Bridge has undergone significant restructuring in recent years but this new division will complement the company’s core offerings. There was a time when every large firm had its own in-house engineering team but those days are long gone. Materials Handling & Process Engineering will plug that gap and will cater for projects ranging in value from £250k to £15 million.
“The new division sits at the very hub of the Motherwell Bridge group of companies, which gives us financial muscle, not to mention technical know-how and human resources.
“Operating from our site in Immingham, Humberside, it will be a major part of the business and our plan is to grow it initially to a £10 million-plus turnover division which will employ up to 50 staff. The opportunities and quote pipeline are already there and I’m confident that we have the right team in place to ensure that we achieve these goals.”
