Motherwell Bridge Fulfills Eastern Promise

Motherwell Bridge Ltd, the Lanarkshire-based engineering contractor, has confirmed its plans to increase its presence in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The company has appointed Bill Reid as its new manager for the region where he will operate from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Bill, who has 30 years experience in the region having worked there for both the Wood Group and more recently Weir in Business Development/Regional Director roles, will take up his post following an induction period spent with Motherwell Bridge’s various trading companies.

Hugh Hayes, chairman of Motherwell Bridge Ltd, had indicated earlier this year that interest in the group’s activities from the Middle East was increasing, and that he was considering opening a representative office there to deal with enquiries.

Making the announcement, Mr Hayes said: “Bill’s appointment follows exploratory visits earlier in the year to the UAE and Libya, where the Motherwell Bridge name is still very well known despite being inactive there for many years.

“With the company’s UK-based trading now performing reasonably well, I felt that the time was right for us to take a cautious look at selected overseas markets.

“Our trading results for the year to June will be ahead of last year, and debt levels will also be down. We’re looking for new business overseas to complement our UK activities, and the Middle East/North Africa region is a sensible starting point.

“We’re not going to be too ambitious in the next year or two, but by having a permanent representative in the region, supporting local agents and clients, we will be able to demonstrate our commitment to the region on a long term basis. The importance of this new post to Motherwell Bridge is highlighted by the fact that Bill will report directly to me.”
